 Dragging Dexter January 9, 2009
The first two Dexter novels were thrilling, fast-paced, thought-provoking, pleasantly over-the-top serial killer mysteries. This one was not any of those.
First, this is not a stand alone novel. If you have not read the first two, you will be lost trying to decipher this one.
Dexter is a serial killer who plays by the rules. Trained by his foster father policeman father, he only kills other serial killers. This is an ingenious formula that works well as long as there is still a serial-killer mystery going on. I guess the best spin you can put on this book is that it was a psychological thriller, or at least mystery, since it was not thrilling in any aspect.
The best part of this book was his "training" of his soon-to-be step-children. Those were the only interesting and entertaining parts. The rest of the book focused on Dexter losing his "passenger": that "thing" he had that allowed him to help solve serial-killer crimes and eradicate the killers. As he searched for the "passenger" he gets wrapped up into the metaphysical. Science fiction is introduced to the Dexter series and it falls flat. It does not match the character in the least.
I reluctantly gave this one three stars because there are still components of humor (especially the droll Dexter alliterations) and the children are gettign interesting. In the end though, Dexter should not be judged by this book. All his fans should skip this one.

Though this book was an interesting read, after reading the first two books and watching the series, I am quite disappointed that Dexter In The Dark had to go into the realm of the supernatural as a core of its plot. I agree with the readers who feel that this book causes the series to lose its consistency by going from fiction to (borderline)science-fiction.

Jeff Lindsay must have read a book or watched a movie recently that spawned a wild hair, because he decided to take Dexter somewhere he hasn't been before and it doesn't seem fitting. It does not feel natural or planned. I do not believe that Lindsay had this plan all along. I suppose he could have, but this sudden turn will throw fans off the ride.
This book is very entertaining and it would have worked well if it was the first of the series or an alternate graphic novel done years after the series concluded, but it doesn't really fit right now. The previous books are dark crime novels with a twist, but that twist has become a supernatural beast that wants to upstage the Dex we know.
The negative reviews had me expecting worse, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually enjoyed the book up until chapter 19. Even then I just put the supernatural mumbo jumbo out of my mind, but there was no getting around it at the end. I'm not going to mention a spoiler, but there is no argument to deny what is happening here. I've seen some reviews say that people are taking this too literal, but it sadly is what it is. The final pages make no mistake about that.
I hate to say it, but I think the writers of the show understand what we love about Dexter more than Lindsay does. Maybe Lindsay just wants to separate himself from the show or prove something with drastic changes, but I'm not left with a good taste in my mouth. I wish there was a way for the fourth book to undo these changes, but it's not likely. I hope the TV show ignores this book altogether. With that said, it was entertaining and it deserves a few stars for that.
 Direly Disappointing Dexter December 16, 2008
As much as I enjoyed the first two books in this series... I just didn't like this one. In this third installment, Dexter's Dark Passenger becomes its own being, and goes AWOL. I preferred thinking of the Dark Passenger as just a voice in Dexter's head, not some amorphous lizard thing that makes relatively normal people want to kill. It just rubbed me the wrong way. The Dark Passenger's absence does create some interesting inner conflict for Dexter, but I think Lindsay just went about it the wrong way. What I do like about this book is Dexter's growing relationship with Cody and Aster, and it'll be interesting to see where that goes as Cody's own shadow gets more insistent. This wasn't bad enough to make me give up the series, but it was disappointing just the same...
