Product Description

This is a journey that began in many places.

It began in Kansas, home of Barack's mother. It began in Africa, home of Barack's father. It began in Hawaii one moonlit night, the night that Barack was born.

Sometimes it was a lonely journey. Sometimes it was an enchanted journey. But throughout this most unusual ride, this boy often wondered: Who am I? Where do I belong?

Jonah Winter and AG Ford re-create the extraordinary story behind the rise of the inspirational icon Barack Obama in this stunning picture book.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended   December 28, 2008

This is full of omissions and propaganda. It reads more like a book that would be reviewed in Pravda. Even hard core liberal Obama fans must realize the blatant bias, outright falsehoods, and idol worship at play in this book. Definitely not for gullible, impressionable children.

1 out of 5 stars MISLEADING   December 26, 2008

ONE OF MY GRANDCHILDREN RECEIVED THIS BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS. AS WE WERE READING IT, I NOTICED NUMEROUS OMISSIONS AND HAZY SUPPOSED FACTS. "WHEN BARACK WAS JUST A TODDLER, HIS FATHER MOVED FAR AWAY". THE QUESTIONS WERE SWIFT AND MANY: "WHERE DID HE MOVE? WHY DID HE MOVE? WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM?" KIDS ARE NOT STUPID. BARACK MOVED TO INDONESIA WHEN HE WAS SIX WITH HER NEW HUSBAND. "WHAT HAPPENED TO HER OLD HUSBAND? DID THEY GET DIVORCED?" HOW WOULD A SIX YEAR OLD KNOW ABOUT EXTREME POVERTY??? "WHY DID HE MOVE TO HAWAII? WHY DID HE LIVE WITH HIS GRANDPARENTS? WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS MOTHER? DIDN'T SHE WANT HIM?" DITTO THE SUDDEN ARRIVAL AND SUDDEN DEPARTURE OF HIS AFRICAN FATHER! MORE QUESTIONS: "HOW DID HE PAY FOR COLLEGE? WERE HIS GRANDPARENTS RICH?"
I RE-READ THE BOOK AND HAVE TONS OF QUESTIONS ALSO: HE "FOUND" HIMSELF AT TRINITY CHURCH? THAT'S SCARY IN VIEW OF THE REV. WRIGHT'S EXTREME VIEWS ON AMERICA! THE AUTHOR HAS PAINTED A SKEWED AND FANTASY PORTRAIT OF OBAMA, WHILE IGNORING DETAILS.......LIKE FACTS. TRUTH BE TOLD, THIS BOOK READS LIKE AN INDOCTRINATION PRIMER FOR CHILDREN. ALSO, THE ILLUSTRATIONS WERE WONDERFUL BUT, AGAIN, NOT TRUTHFUL. MY GRANDSON IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT OBAMA'S WHITE MOTHER LOOKED VERY "BROWN" TO HIM. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Illustrated, Charming Children's Book   December 16, 2008

This book is really a treasure and I'm a little surprised I haven't heard more about it (although I just checked and I guess it's actually a best-seller so maybe I just wasn't paying attention!) I bought it for my 7 year old nephew who adores Barack Obama and wants to learn all about him. My nephew LOVES this book, really enjoys reading it and having it read to him. I would say this book is really ideal for a 7 year old, for someone younger and up to maybe a 10 year old. If your child is older than 10, there may be some more age-appropriate Obama biographies, although I think anyone of any age would enjoy the book very much.

There is another children's book about BO that I browsed in the bookstore and I chose this one because I really loved the illustrations which are BEAUTIFUL and, as another commenter said, remind me of old-fashioned children's books and the realistic imagery they used. The book itself is a very age-appropriate and well-written retelling of Barack Obama's general biography. The writing is very lyrical and charming. Overall, a great find, although I look forward to buying another Obama biography that includes his election to the Presidency of the United States, since this one was written before the election even happened.

Still, highly recommended and would be adored by any child under 10.

1 out of 5 stars Messiah Worship   December 13, 2008

I saw this book at a store today and it literally made me ill. If you worship Obama and want your kids to worship him to, then this book is for you. If you haven't yet reached the point where you pray to him 3 times a day and burn incense around his portrait, steer clear.

1 out of 5 stars A cult-like status not unlike Hitler's   December 8, 2008

This book is well written and beautifully illustrated, atleast, for propaganda it is. Seriously, I understand partisanship bias, but even the most staunch liberal will find this book eerily similar to the cult-like propaganda that surrounded Hitler during the Third Reich. I mean, just take a look at the cover! The writing isn't much better. It relates the story of how this great man has and will continue to "save" America and deliver us from the pitfalls of our evil, racist past. This book reads like a children's book about Jesus. I kept turning the pages to see the illustration where Barack walks on water. Have no illusions: if you buy this book for your child, you have made a firm commitment to early indoctrination.
