Product Description A Walk in the Woods is a laugh-out-loud account of an outrageously rugged hike by a beloved comic author. Bill Bryson decided in 1996 to walk the 2,100-mile Appalachian trail. Winding from Georgia to Maine, this uninterrupted 'hiker's highway' sweeps through the heart of some of America's most beautiful and treacherous terrain. Bryson risked snake bite and hantavirus to trudge up unforgiving mountains, plod through swollen rivers, and yearn for cream sodas and hot showers. This amusingly ill-conceived adventure brings Bryson to the height of his comic powers, but his acute eye also observes an astonishing landscape of silent forests, sparkling lakes, and other national treasures that are often ignored or endangered. The Lost Continent, Bill Bryson's hilarious first travel book, chronicled a trip in his mother's Chevy around small town America. Since then, he has written several more about the UK and the US, including notable bestsellers, A Walk in the Woods, I'm A Stranger Here Myself, In a Sunburned Country and, most recently, A Short History of Nearly Everything.

Entertaining walk with Bryson January 5, 2009 Readers seem to be rating this book higher as it ages. Informative and humorous, it keeps your attention every minute. Some of the commentary on forest conservation, etc. is discouraging....Let's hope that situation has improved since the book was written, but that's doubtful, given the environmental record of the Bush administration.
Some photos would be a big plus. Viewing one of the great videos about the trail before reading is recommended.
Awesome December 31, 2008 Bill Bryson is LOL square LOL funny. Nobody,i mean nobody, writes travelogues like Bill(can i call you Bill, Mr.Bryson?). A Walk in the Woods is an account of Bryson's 2000+ mile hike of the Appalachian Trail with his friend Katz. Katz makes for interesting company and the duo's adventures are hilarious to read. I hyucked as i devoured page after page, wanting it to never end. Not to mention the insight i gained into camping, environment, history, nature and the trail itself.
Hilarious December 30, 2008 This book is hilarious and will have you laughing out loud at the antics of Bill and Katz and that does not happen with many books. It will also make you want to go hike the Appalachian Trail. I had my wife read the book and she too was laughing out loud. We both highly recommend it even if you are not into hiking or the outdoors at all.
All Time Favorite Book December 24, 2008 Thank you to the stranger that recommended this book to me as I wandered through the Cincinnati Airport Book Store looking for something to keep me occupied.
This is a funny funny book and I enjoyed the visions that Bill Bryson gave.
I have given this to several people of different backgrounds and they too have added it to their list of favorite books. About a year after I read the book I was standing in line to check in for yet another flight, and the woman in front of me was reading and laughing...when I peaked, she was reading this book too.
Fantastic read December 21, 2008 This was my first Bill Bryson read. I bought this book while camping in Shenandoah National Park, and it's one of the best book purchases I've made. Bill provides a highly entertaining recount of his hike on the AT with his out-of-shape buddy Katz as well as very informative, yet interesting, history and science lessons. I really enjoyed reading the story and I actually learned quite a bit, which I'm constantly sharing with my friends and family. I've never actually laughed out loud while reading a book until now, and I must say that I was kind of sad to finish it. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
