beautifully written, interesting western January 2, 2009
There's so much good about this "on the road" western. I like the early 20th century time period, with a trace of the wild west still lingering. Monte Becket, the narrator, leaves his wife and son in Minnesota to travel with the wanted criminal Glendon. The reason (something missing in his life) is not entirely believable to me. In their travels, we meet many interesting characters in places artfully portrayed by the author. Reading this, I could visualize a beautiful independent film. I hope they make one. I saw these characters and places so clearly. One important element, though, was missing for me. I could see every character in the book except Monte, the narrator! He was pretty nondescript to me, and so I was not as emotionally invested as I would expect to be in a novel like this. This book is impressive, but didn't touch my heart until almost the end of the book. Every page is a treat, but the whole was a tiny bit empty. Still, I liked it and recommend it.

This is a great book. Leif Enger invites the reader to join the characters in a magnificently told adventure. Enger joins my list of favorite authors with this book.

I did not receive this book. I received an email saying that the order could not be filled. So, I re-ordered from another source and received that book promptly and in very good condition. Can't rate something that I didn't receive. So I doubt what I have entered here will be accepted by Amazon.

I LOVED Peace Like a River, one of my favorite books of all time, I LIKED So Brave Young and Handsome, I cared about the characters, and Siringo was just such a tough old bird that you loved to hate him. Sort of a road trip/western/triple love story all in one.

If somone would be so kind as to give me the rules for writing a book review, I will gladly read and follow them because I SOOO want to give this book the absolute love it deserves. The tale begins in 1915 when Monte, a writer suffering serious writer's block after having written a very successful novel, receives the invitation of a life time from a friend, Glendon, who needs to reunite himself with Blue, his old lover with whom he lives to make ammends. Even Monte's wife thinks her husband needs this great fun and encourages him to go! And so they are off on a westbound train and no sooner are they seated in the dining car when Glendon is recognized by a "Pinkerton." Glendon never quite told Monte much about his work which by the way had been ROBBING TRAINS for the last fifteen years. I don't want to spoil the coming adventures but there are a plenty and this book FLOWS with beautifully chosen prose and painfully accurate descriptions. Reading this book is just a joy. I gave it to my dad for his birthday but then I started reading it that day, I told him I would have to stick it in the mail this week! If you books like Plainsong, or Water for Elephants, you will love this book.
